Baros Maldives Island Resort

Like the Bandos island resort, Baros Maldives had a major overhaul in 2005. In fact the resort was closed and was practically rebuilt and reopened as a new resort. The designers and planners have done a very good job of preserving the beauty and style that made the previous resort so popular and the new Baros is definitely an improvement. The raised level of style and service now places this island resort firmly amongst the elite. The grand reception area greets guests as they arrive at the jetty for the first time and provides a pleasant sense of arrival.

As well as the luxury and sheer beauty of the island, the food and service here is definitely helps place this resort in the elite class. The focal point of the resort is the lighthouse restaurant, which, with a dramatically peaked white roof, is the only building on the resort that isn’t thatched. The lighthouse is split between two levels with the lounge bar taking up the top level and offering amazing panoramic views, and the sea-level haute cuisine restaurant serving an exceptional menu of Mediterranean and Asian dishes. the line restaurant is available all day and offers an informal option, and the other main restaurant – the Cayenne Grill – prepares a range of meat, seafood and vegetarian options to your specification and serves you at an individual thatched pavilion right on the waters edge. Everyone visiting the resort is on a bed and breakfast package, so the service and quality of these restaurants are pivotal to the resorts reputation.

The beaches are generally excellent with just a few narrow places here and there. A low wall has been put in place at the boundary of part of the reef to protect the beach from erosion.

Accommodation

The first impressions are raised even further when guests arrive at

theiraccommodation for the first time. There are 3 categories of room here: 24 Deluxe villas, 20 Baros villas and 30 water villas, plus one single pool villa. The quality of the workmanship and attention to simple detail cannot be overstated, and walking into these rooms for the first time may give you the impression that you have walked into a magazine article for a stylish hotel. There are designer fittings, concealed plasma Tv, quality coffee maker, and a well-stocked wine cooler.

Every room in this resort is just a few steps away from the beach or lagoon and each has a large deck area complete with a day bed. Combined with the well stocked wine cooler and 24 hour room service its not surprising that many guests stay put for days on end.

Activities

Snorkeling is good here as access to the reef, which runs around most of the island, is good. The dive school here is run by PADI which offers a range of courses from an introductory beginners dive in the lagoon and beyond. There are over 30 dive sites within reach of this resort which offers good potential for spotting some interesting marine life. The resort also has a resident Marine Biologist providing a useful guide for the local oceanographic world and for snorkeling trips and excursions on the house reef.

Events in 2009

In support of the ocean project, the Baros resort will be holding some special ‘caring’ activites during 2009:

“At Baros we aspire to nurture and sustain our unique environment and we have a part to play in promoting sustainable tourism. We are serious in our commitment to the environment in which we live and work and our responsibility to ensure its protection. In participation to upcoming World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, we have designed some beneficial “caring luxury” activities for our guests and personnel.”
